Today we engaged in sensory play with shaving cream! Not only were we able to practice writing our letters and sight words on our desks, we were able to make our desks look like brand new!

For this month's aina, we learned about the lifecycle of a butterfly. Here is our new classroom pets: Stripy and Slimy! We are excited to see them turn into a chrysalis and then a beautiful monarch butterfly!
Every week, I look forward to show & tell! I absolutely love seeing the students share something that is special to them with their peers. Show and tell enhances students' speaking skills, builds their self-esteem and confidence, allows them to practice their public speaking skills. Here are some pictures from our first show and tell.
I am a STRONG believer in play in early childhood. Play allows students to practice their communication and negotiating skills, exercise their creativity and imagination, and allows them to experience other points of view. It also lets them work together to problem solve conflicts about space, materials, or rules positively. Through play, students are able to express and cope with feelings and work on their fine and gross motor skills. At the end of each day, we have 30-45 minutes of center time. Here are some of our centers: BLOCK CENTER, LEGO CENTER, IPAD CENTER, LINCOLN LOG CENTER, ART CENTER, DRAMATIC PLAY CENTER, PLAYDOH CENTER, and PUZZLE CENTER.
I believe kindergarten should be a social year filled with play that promotes learning! Literacy:

This week in science, we learned about the scientific method. Scientists ask a question, create a hypothesis, test their hypothesis, and come to a conclusion. We asked the question, "How many drops of water can a penny hold?"
This past week we had our first aina lesson! We learned about the lifecycle of a flower and planted flowers in our butterfly garden!
We read a book called "Have you filled a bucket today?" We learned that EVERYONE has an invisible bucket that holds good feelings and thoughts. When we do or say nice things to others, we fill up that person's bucket (bucket fillers). We learned that when we fill up other people's buckets, ours gets filled up too! When we say mean things or treat people unkindly, we dip into their buckets and take out some of that good feeling (bucket dippers). We learned that when we dip into other's buckets, we lose some of our good feelings too. As a class, we talked about different actions or behaviors and if it would fill or dip someone's bucket. I was SO proud of how everyone shared ideas on how they would like to fill buckets: play with someone who is lonely, give someone a hug if she/he is feeling sad, tell their mom and dad they love them----it was awesome! We hope to be bucket fillers throughout our lives and make the world a happier place :)
